motorcycle backpack question by Nancy: Looking for a thin, small motorcycle backpack
I commute to work appx. 8 miles a day. I am currently using a backpack that is too wide (front to back). Can anyone recommend a thin, appx. 4 to 5″ wide backpack. (Saddlebags WON’T work on my bike).

dont know it it would help and it’s not that small but there is a company called boblebee that make back pack’s for bikers that are water proof hard back which work as a back protector so if your useing it to commute then any protection is good but there hard to find and not but you do get some good deals on e-bags which is where I got mine if you dont mind unpopula colour the site is http://www.ebags.co.uk/search/index.cfm?fuseaction=searching&brandid=253&categoryid=23348&end_keywords=boblebee

Hitting the trails one should always go prepared, necessary items that are needed is motorcycle luggage filled with a change of clothes, a backpack for your daily incidentals, and to keep snug and warm, a leather jacket and vest, maybe a GPS or just a good compass and a map. Now, you have to know where you are going, especially, knowledge of the terrain to make sure you have the right kind of motorcycle to handle the hills and rougher trails and ruts in the back trail roads.

A great habit to be in, is to tell people where you are going, if going alone, tell them approximately what time you plan to be back. It is not an unusual thing for a biker when riding trails hits a small log and upsets his bike and accidentally breaking a leg, not nice, but these things do happen and if you have trouble erecting your bike to get on to ride, you will be looking for help to come and you surely do not want to wait a week, if your friends know you are not back when you planned to be, they will come looking for you, that’s not good but better than waiting for ever.

Ideally, for any back country trail biking it’s a good idea to go with a buddy, as its a lot more fun sharing the beauty of the back trails with someone, Its not only sharing the views but the reminiscent of the trip afterwards with many laughs of pranks you might have pulled on one another and being able to share with other buddies, after they hear of the fun you had all kinds of friends with bikes will want to come along on the next trip.

So remember, when going for a trail rides have proper equipment, like a leather vest, backpacks, motorcycle luggage and when its buffalo leather you will know its strong and durable.

I live in Florida and don’t want to get caught in the rain with my computer and school work in a regular backpack… Right now I’m looking at the Alpinestar Charger and Axio Hardpack. Any recommendations help. Thanks in advance!

Commuting with a motorcycle is great, even transporting small articles to different points. But we do have to consider that the added weight will cause more wear and tear on the bike, including the suspension, drive train, tires and brakes.

If you are piling on a load, you will want to pay special attention to where you are placing the heavier stuff. How you secure the item(s) and also how your bike handles with the heavier ballast added, varying the options of placement is important and needs your consideration. If you went to the grocery store and returning with only a small amount, a netted bungee holder is ample. Cord it to the the passenger bike saddle but be careful of bungee cords or any tie downs that might come loose and get caught up in a wheel or lash out and give you a nasty whip on the face.

A backpack is handy, ,just be careful not to put in any protruding hard objects. Although a backpack can be extra protection in a fall, sharp objects would not be. If you are loading up your bike, sort your load so that the load is proportionally distributed so your bike is balanced the same as when it is not loaded. You will find lots of different ideas for transporting loads on your bike like motorcycle luggage and saddlebags.

Make sure if you’re are carrying extra freight that your motorcycle tires are fully inflated. Do check out the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) also check the maximum loading capacity and the correct tire pressure which you will find on the tire walls.

Some people pull trailers behind them which some bike dealers will not recommend. They say, you are on your own, so, you should remember, if you’re pulling a trailer and you have an accident, that the trailer is going to get you from behind.

Whenever riding you should wear proper clothing for protection to yourself, like a motorcycle jacket, leather gloves, leather vest and chaps are great.

There are few things to consider when reviewing and purchasing a new motorcycle camping tent. Deciding what your budget is will help narrow your choices. Most motorcycle tents are compact, lightweight and easy to carry on your motorcycle.

#1. Size:This will probably be your greatest consideration. Most tents designed for motorcycle camping are 1 or 2 person tents. Tent capacity is based on the total number of people who will be using the tent at one time, and their gear. Chose a size that can easily accommodate the number of persons and what gear needs to be protected. Solo riders may opt for a larger 2 person tent depending on how much gear they have to Stowe.

#2. Weight:Weight is not a huge concern since you will not be carrying the tent as a backpacker would. But smaller tents are usually lighter and easier to pack onto your bike. Most backpacking tents will serve just as well as tents sold for motorcycle riders. Take this into consideration when choosing your next tent.

#3. Ease of Assembly:After a hard days ride, you need a tent that assembles quickly and easily such as Catoma’s Lone Rider or 2 Up 2 tent. These tents are specifically designed to for motorcycle riders and have all the features you need for road trips. Choosing wisely will save you time and make setup a breeze.

#4. Tent Fabrics:There is really only one choice for a motorcyclist tent and that would be nylon. Nylon provides you with a lightweight and durable fabric that can be stored compactly. Canvas is not really an option due to it’s size and weight. Nylon models can also use lightweight fiberglass or aluminum poles for framing systems.

#5. Frame System:Tent frames can be made from several types of materials including, steel, aluminum and fiberglass. Most common for smaller lightweight tents are fiberglass or aluminum, and this will be your best choice for a motorcycle tent. The easier your tent is to setup, the happier you will be. Using a model with a insta-set frame is by far the simplest to assemble.

Additional Considerations:Look for tent with a full coverage fly that extends to the ground. This will help keep you and your gear dry and warm. Bathtub style floors keep you and your gear moisture free. Choose no-see-um mesh screen over standard screen to better protect you from bugs. Choosing your new tent wisely will ensure years of use and enjoyment on the road.

Motorcycle riders know how exciting it is to explore the country. Having the right equipment for those long rides can make all the difference. A motorcycle camping trip allows you to spend the night outdoors enjoying nature. Camping is growing in popularity and using a motorcycle to get there is also increasing.

Before heading out on a motorcycle camping trip, you will need to research the activity you are about to undertake. Where will I go and what will I need to make this trip a successful one is at the heart of any motorcycle camping trip. Deciding where to camp is fairly easy, search the internet for campgrounds, state parks or ask fellow riders for recommendations. Choosing your camping gear is a little harder, but with a few simple tips, it will become second nature.

Ensuring you have the right gear, what you need:

Small lightweight camping tent: Several manufactures offer tents especially designed for motorcycles. These tents are easy to setup, fit neatly on your bike and offer all the normal protection of a family camping tent.

Sleeping Bag: A compact sleeping bag that offers the temperature rating necessary to keep you comfortable is all you need. A goose down bag is preferable for colder climates and roll up very compactly for transport. Hammocks can also come in handy as they take up very little room and can be setup almost anywhere you have trees.

Eating / Cooking: For extended stays, a small camp stove, similar to the ones used for backpacking will work perfectly. A lightweight aluminum cook-set and utensils will be plenty for cooking meals.

Storage Bags / Saddle Bags:No mater how you store or pack your gear, you will need some sort of heavy duty waterproof storage bags. Adding saddle bags to your bike is a great way to stow gear. A travel or duffel bag makes a perfect addition for storing your tent and sleeping gear and can easily be strapped to the rear of the bike.

Other Gear:A few other considerations for gear include; a tarp for shade or to use as a floor protector for your tent. Change of clothes, motorcycle tool kit with multi-tool, tire plug kit and pump. Make yourself a three column check list, one for gear, one for short trips and one for long trips. This will help gather the correct gear to match the trip.

Ensure you have the right gear and no unwanted stuff you do not actually need for the trip. Choose the items wisely and buy only the ones that will fit comfortably on your motorcycle. Once you have put your motorcycle camping kit together, you can assure yourself many enjoyable camping trips on the open road.
