Is your motorcycle GPS system leaving you feeling empty? Do you miss exploring the unknown driving a motorcycle?
Leave your Garmin GPS system at home, and get lost.
Touring on my motorcycle during fall is a wonderful time to ride. There’s nothing prettier than roads dusted orange with sugar maple leaves.
GPS systems for motorcycles have gained in popularity. Many are weather resistant, and can be operated with your ‘left’ gloved finger. With these GPS systems, however; motorcycle touring has become more about technology, and less about exploring the outdoors.
Don’t we ride motorcycles to explore nature, and to escape the pressures of life?
This is precisely why I rode last week. With no GPS and only a simple Google map in my motorcycle tank bag, I began my tour. My plans were simple: to find the narrowest roads… with the best fall colors… within 200 miles of home. I had enough map to ride a little south and a-bit east. My schedule was open until 6pm.
After Mike (a riding buddy) and I met for breakfast, he left for a meeting at work. He claims it was important — something to do with recycling astronaut sweat on-board the Space Shuttle. I continued my motorcycle ride solo.
I had no schedule, no timetable, no detailed map — and I was loving every minute of it.
In my quest to find the best roads, I continued west. Before I knew it, I was at the edge of my Google map. I didn’t stop. It’s hard to describe the peace inside as I ventured past the known, off my printed map.
There was no GPS to tell me where I was. With only the inclination of the sun to guide me, and an interstate to bound me, I continued west.
As the state roads turned to county, the path became more rural, and more interesting. My plans included nothing more than the next curve in sight. At every intersection, I made a real-time decision: left, right, or straight.
My scripted life started again at 6pm with a meeting at my house. The sun told me home was east, and I started searching for a road in that direction. I knew I-65 was the quickest way home, and I-65 was east. How far? I had no idea, and I loved it.
I could have asked for directions, but I didn’t want the feeling of ‘being lost’ to end. I turned east on Highway 69, and thirty miles later I found the quick-way home.
When I pulled into my garage I was exhausted… yet exhilarated. Being lost without my motorcycle GPS was just what I needed.
I got lost on my motorcycle today, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Motorcycle saddle bags are one of the most important elements that all riders will need no matter what distance they are traveling. Although they are typically used for long journeys, they are also very useful for carrying tools and valuable belongings. Learning how to care for the bags is essential. This will guarantee that this piece of vital equipment is kept in top condition, and lasts far longer.Purchasing top quality saddle bags is the first stage to ensure that they remain in great condition. Although it is tempting to buy lesser quality motorcycle saddle bags in the long run, it is better spending more. This will ensure that the materials that the bags are made from are of great quality, and can be cleaned and maintained with ease. Leather is typically the most popular material of choice, which is durable, stylish and can be cleaned many times.Keeping the leather motorcycle bags pliable and soft is essential to guaranteeing that they last many years. The bags will need to be used in all weather, and this constant abuse can be harsh on the bags. However, if the correct cleaning is being done the bags will remain looking great, and functioning as they should. Although the rain and wind will cause damage, the leather will also be affected by extreme sunlight.Selecting the correct cleaning products to maintain the motorcycle saddle bags is essential, and there are many different ones available to choose. Top quality leather cleaners will cost more; however, they will guarantee that the saddle bags are kept in great condition. Purchasing a cleaner that has UV protection is advised to ensure that the sun cannot penetrate the leather and cause it to dry out. If the leather is allowed to become brittle they will diminish very quickly.Any cleaning materials for the bags should be checked to ensure that there are no harsh chemicals that could damage the leather. Mild cleaning products are advised, especially if the user is unsure of the contents. They can also be diluted to guarantee that no damage will be done to the saddle bags. Cleaning the motorcycle saddle bags should be done either outside, or in a well ventilated area.Although the saddle bags need to be cleaned regularly, this can be done every fortnight, unless they have received a great deal of harsh conditions. Applying the leather cleaner at least every two weeks will guarantee that the leather remains soft. Not only will this ensure that the motorcycle saddle bags are kept in perfect condition, but will also look great as well. Riders like to ensure that every element of their bike, apparel and equipment looks great.Polishing them something that some riders prefer to do, as it makes them look fantastic. However, over time the polish can clog the pores of the leather, and should only be done on rare occasions. Water protecting products are another great way to ensure that the motorcycle saddle bags are being maintained well. If the bags are looked after and maintained well, they will last for any years looking incredible.

motorcycle tank bag question by Miki the Malamute: Question concerning my roommate and his dog?
My roommate has a tiny little Chihuahua/Feist mix dog, just so you all can get a visual. Well, the roommate doesn’t have own a car but he has a motorcycle. When he leaves and wants to take his dog with him, he usually has to wait for his girlfriend to get off work so he can borrow her car. Well, anyway, today he said he was tired of doing that and was thinking about turning his tank bag on his bike into a thing he can put his dog in. I was kinda shocked, I can only assume the loud exhaust would be HORRIBLE for the dogs ears. He has the exhaust tweaked so it’s really really (obnoxiously) loud. He wants to do it today so he can make a 2 hour trip back to his parents house. This IS bad for the dogs ears correct? I mean, the dog is petrified of the vacuum noise..I can’t imagine the sound of the bike. Just concerned for his dog, wondering if there is anything I can do..
And has anyone else ever heard of someone doing this? I have a dog, but I made sure I had a car before I rescued him. He couldn’t fit on a bike anyway, he’s too big. Haha. ![]()
I figured. ![]()
I really did tell him that it was a bad idea, but he just grinned at me. It really really is upsetting, he is so backwards. Just a few days ago I was brushing Miki’s teeth and the roommate told me he used human toothpaste on his dog. So, yeah. This is who I am dealing with. Very frustrating. Can’t imagine what will happen when the lease is up in a month and I never see them again.

That’s gonna be really bad for the dog if he doesn’t like the vacuum noise.
